How to play Tea Leaves

Guess today's five-letter word in ten tries. After each guess the tea leaves give you a reading, but a cryptic one. A solid leaf means one of your letters is right and in the right spot. A hollow leaf means one of your letters is in the word but in a different spot. You're never told which letters they are.

That's the puzzle: compare your guesses, work out which letters must be in and which must be out, and close in on the word. The notepad helps you keep track. Every answer has five different letters.

Is Tea Leaves free?

Yes. It's free to play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to download and no sign-up.

How is it different from Wordle?

Wordle tells you about each letter. Tea Leaves only tells you how many are right, so it's more like a code-breaking puzzle. Expect it to take a few more guesses, which is why you get ten.

Any tips?

A guess that gets no leaves at all is gold: all five of its letters are out. Change one letter at a time between guesses to find out which one made the difference.

When is there a new puzzle?

Every day at midnight, your time. Everyone gets the same word, so you can compare with friends.
